About Skillet & Stove

An independent buying guide for cast iron and enameled cast iron cookware — honest about what it is, and honest about what it isn't.

Skillet & Stove is an independent buying guide for cast iron cookware — skillets, dutch ovens, enameled pots, and the care that keeps them going. The goal is narrow and useful: help you spend the right amount on the right pan, which is very often less than the internet wants you to.

Who writes it

Everything here is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who’s genuinely into cast iron cooking — the kind of person who reads the manufacturer manuals, compiles the published specs, and does the cost math for fun. He is not a chef, an engineer, or a product tester with a lab, and this site never pretends otherwise. What he brings is a habit of checking the spec sheet against the price tag and telling you plainly when a $25 pan does the same job as a $250 one.

What we do — and don’t

Nearly every “best cast iron skillet” article claims to have tested twenty pans. We haven’t, and we say so. We don’t run a test kitchen, we don’t own the pans we compare, and we won’t invent a star rating to look authoritative. Instead we compete on the one thing the lab-based sites are often thin on: transparent, reproducible methodology. We compare the published specs, model the ten-year cost of ownership, and cite every source, so you could redo our comparison yourself. That’s laid out in full on our methodology page.

We also don’t take sponsorships or free products in exchange for coverage, and we don’t publish fabricated reviews or testimonials. When a manufacturer doesn’t publish a spec, we print “Not published” rather than guessing.

How the site pays for itself

Skillet & Stove is free to read and funded by affiliate links: when you buy through one of our links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. It never changes which pan we recommend — the reasoning is the same whether a link earns us anything or not. The full details are on our affiliate disclosure and editorial policy pages.
