Can You Use Cast Iron on a Glass Top Stove?

Yes. The cooktop manufacturers do not tell you not to — they tell you how. The rules are short, and every one of them is about the base of the pan and how it moves.

This question gets a lot of confident, contradictory answers, so it is worth going to the people who make the cooktops and the people who make the pans. Both say the same thing, and neither says don’t.

GE Appliances’ own support guidance on cooktop scratches identifies the causes: cookware with rough bottoms, sliding pans across the surface, and grains of salt or sugar caught underneath a pan. Its recommendations are to lift rather than slide, keep cookware bases clean and smooth, and avoid rough or warped pans. Field Company — a cast iron maker — publishes essentially the same advice from the other side: make sure the base is clean and dry, and place the pan down gently rather than dropping it.

In other words, this is a handling question, not a compatibility question.

What actually causes the damage

Grit, not weight

The instinct is that a heavy pan is the risk. It mostly is not. Cooktops are engineered to hold full pots of water, and a 7 lb skillet sitting still on glass is doing nothing to it.

What scratches glass is something hard dragged across it. That means a rough pan base, or — far more often — a grain of spilled salt, a fragment of sugar or a bit of grit trapped between an otherwise smooth pan and the surface. The pan becomes the tool and the grit becomes the abrasive. This is why GE lists salt and sugar spills alongside rough cookware as a cause.

It follows that the highest-risk moment is not cooking. It is the small adjusting shove people give a pan to center it on the element.

Impact, which is the one that breaks things

Scratches are cosmetic. Cracks are not, and the cause is impact rather than load. Setting a heavy pot down one-handed from six inches up concentrates a surprising amount of force on the point that lands first. Use two hands and lower it. Nothing else about cast iron on glass is remotely as expensive to get wrong.

The rules, in order of how much they matter

Lift, never slide. Pick the pan up to move it, every time, even an inch. This one habit prevents most smoothtop scratching.

Keep the base clean. Wipe the bottom of the pan and the cooktop before cooking. A dry, clean, smooth base on clean glass is benign.

Deal with spills before the pan goes down. Salt, sugar and grit are the abrasives in this system. If you have spilled something, wipe it before you set a pan on it.

Lower the pan with two hands. Especially anything over about 6 lb, and especially a full dutch oven.

Do not use warped or rough-bottomed pans. Put the pan on a flat counter and press one edge. If it rocks, it should not go on glass.

Which cast iron is riskiest

Legged camp dutch ovens: don’t. The three legs mean the entire weight of the pot rests on three small points, and the pot rocks. This is the one piece of cast iron we would keep off a smoothtop entirely. Old pans with heat rings. Many pre-1960s skillets have a raised ring around the base, designed to seat the pan on a wood stove opening. On glass that ring is a narrow contact band and, if it has any casting roughness, an effective scratching edge. Our vintage buying guide explains how to spot one.

Warped vintage or badly abused pans. Cast iron warps if it is heated hard and then shocked with cold water. A warped base wobbles, which means it also slides.

Anything with rust or casting flash on the base. Both are abrasive. Scrub the underside as part of a rust clean-up.

Cooking well on a smoothtop, not just safely

The performance question is separate from the damage question, and it is where most of the frustration actually lives.

A radiant glass cooktop heats the pan through the glass, and it is not a fast transfer. A heavy skillet can take five to eight minutes to come properly up to temperature — considerably longer than on gas. The mistake is to compensate by turning the dial to high, which scorches the center of the pan while the rim is still cool and gives you the uneven heating people blame the cooktop for.

Preheat longer at a medium setting. That is the whole technique. Once cast iron is charged, its stored heat is precisely what a radiant element cannot supply on demand — which is why cast iron is arguably a better match for a smoothtop than a thin pan, not a worse one.

Two smaller points. Pan overhang matters more here than on gas: a 12-inch skillet on an 8-inch element will run noticeably cooler at the rim, so match the pan to the element where you can. And most smoothtops cycle the element on and off to hold a setting, which a thin pan reveals as fluctuating heat and a heavy cast iron pan smooths out completely.

Induction is a different, better case

If your glass surface is induction rather than radiant, cast iron is close to the ideal cookware. Induction generates heat in the pan itself by inducing current in a magnetic base, and cast iron is solid iron. It heats faster than it would on a radiant top and responds better.

The requirement is a flat base making full contact — which rules out legged camp ovens and warped pans, exactly as above. Every flat-bottomed pan on this site is induction-ready, and the spec table on each product page says so.

Cleaning up afterwards

Let the cooktop cool, then use a cooktop cleaner and a non-scratch pad. Do not attack it while hot, and do not use an abrasive scourer — the scratches people blame on their skillet are quite often from the pad they cleaned up with afterwards.

Spilled sugar is the one exception worth knowing: it can bond to hot glass and is best scraped off with a proper cooktop scraper while the surface is still warm, before it sets.
